Topic 
The internationally oriented Summer School 2016: Negotiating Space. Art and Dissent is a collaboration between Manifesta 11 and Zurich University of the Arts, ZHdK. The Summer School in Zürich will explore challenges in contemporary art production by means of a research-led, practical approach focusing on art in the public realm. An investigative think tank situation will collectively consider how contemporary art can produce, provoke and contribute to critical public debates. The project further aims to intensify intercultural exchange and networks, to examine differences of civil society and, finally to develop competences through artistic engagement. The focus of the Summer School is on the notion of the public sphere. The public sphere describes a site of social relations and negotiations. It’s a space where public opinions can be formed and created through public debates and through encounters of a variety of interests and concerns. Contemporary art shows the diversity of public and cultural spheres and serves as an instrument and method of shaping them. Public art is an artistic practice that initiates public debates, takes part in them, addresses social issues, and questions established values. These actions facilitate dissent and critique as important cornerstones of civil society, performing the function of art as a critical voice within society. 

Program 
The first week is manly defined by three seminar modules lead by the artists CAMP (Shaina Anand and Ashok Sukumaran), Mumbai; Philip Rizk and Jasmina Metwaly, Cairo and Manifesta 11 artist Georgia Sagri, Athens. The second week will be structured by open formats, mentoring sessions and discussions, which aim to enable the participants to react individually on the topics of the Summer School.

CAMP’s works in video and film, electronic media, and public art forms are characterized by a hand-dirtying, non-alienated relation to technology. CAMP's projects have entered modern social and technical assemblies: energy, communication and surveillance systems, neighbourhoods, ships, archives – things much larger than itself. These are shown as not having a fixed function or destiny, making them both a medium and stage for artistic activity.

At the center of Georgia Sagris practice lies the exploration of performance as an ever-evolving field within social and visual life, interconnected, though distinct from the dialectics of representation in theatre, music and dance. In addition to performance pieces, she has been developing in the past fifteen years, a great part of her artistic output comprises video and computer works, texts, installations and drawings. Most of her work is influenced from her on-going engagement in political movements and struggles, on issues of autonomy, empowerment and self-organization.

The artistic practice of Jasmina Metwaly and Philip Rizk focuses on the condition of work, labour and revolt. Performance, theatre and film are used to explore the social and political landscape of Egypt and its revolution of 2011.
